A PLAY area that doubles as a food bank has been nominated as a Covid Hero.

Goldhill Adventure Playground, off Saffron Lane in Leicester, has been helping struggling families through the recent tough times and was nominated by Rod Cowell, 74, who lives nearby.

He has been using the food bank for the past few weeks and said the hard work the staff do, and the quality of food they provided, made them an even more valuable resource than they have been in the past.

He said: “The play area has been there for the 22 years that I’ve lived here and for long before that, too.

“They’ve always been doing lots of activities for children after school and in the school holidays, too.

“It’s made a big difference to the lives of people around here and now they do a food bank as well.

“I’m a pensioner and I’ve been going to the food bank for a couple of months now.

“They have a small food bank on Wednesdays and a bigger one on Fridays, when the queue can easily be 100 yards long.

“All the food is good-quality tinned and frozen stuff and it’s a great thing when you’re struggling to survive on the money you get.

“That place does a great job helping the underprivileged around here.”

We launched our Covid Heroes features in conjunction with Amazon to recognise the people and organisations helping others get through the difficulties of 2020.

As well as the obvious increase in medical needs caused by the pandemic, Covid-19 has led to many people losing their jobs and many others being furloughed and having their wages cut, while others have been suffering increased anxiety due to the threat of the disease.
