A MAN and a woman were arrested on suspicion of drug offences after armed police stopped a car on a city estate.

Witnesses reported seeing armed officers surrounding a black vehicle in Dominion Road, on Leicester’s

New Parks estate, at about 5.30pm on Thursday. The incident happened close to the Tesco Express store.

One onlooker, who did not want to be named, said he saw three people - including a woman - sitting inside the car as officers shone a flashlight inside the vehicle.

“The police were armed but I couldn’t see them drawing any weapons,” he said. “There were three people, including a woman, sitting in the car.

“There was no sign of the driver and officers appeared to be shining a torch into the vehicle as if they were looking for something.”

The road, which is on the main bus route between New Parks and the city centre, was closed between the inner ring road, New Parks Way, and the Liberty Road turn. Buses and other traffic waited in the road, with tailbacks developing as they waited for the police cordon to be lifted. The road reopened shortly before 7pm.

A police spokeswoman confirmed two people were arrested.

She said: ““Two people, a man and a woman, were arrested on suspicion of drug offences and remain in police custody while inquiries continue.

“In the interest of safety, armed officers were in attendance to support the arrest. Dominion Road was closed for a short time while officers responded at the scene.”
