Wrong railway homes are to be built upon

RE the article on page 8 of the January 18 edition “Plan for 28 flats at site of historic railway line”: The photograph shown highlights a section of trackbed of the Great Central Railway which first saw passenger trains in 1899, closed in 1969 and runs alongside Barnwell Avenue.

Your text refers to the Leicester and Swanningto­n railway, which did open in 1832 with the section from West Bridge station to Desford closing to passenger traffic in 1928 and finally to goods in 1966.

Part of the trackbed of this railway between St Augustine Road and Fosse Road North is known locally as the Rally Bank.
