City close to a new deal with in-form Iheanacho

LEICESTER City are reportedly close to agreeing a new long-term contract with Kelechi Iheanacho after his goalscoring heroics this season, writes Shane Ireland.

The Nigerian forward is close to entering the final 12 months of the five-year deal he signed when arriving at the King Power Stadium from Manchester City in 2017.

Manager Brendan Rodgers is understandably keen to secure Iheanacho’s future with the 24-year-old having been in inspired form recently.

His brace in the 3-1 FA Cup quarter-final win against Manchester United means he has scored 12 goals in 15 starts this season.

Iheanacho’s form has been crucial at a time when goals have dried up for his strike partner Jamie Vardy.

According to The Sun, Iheanacho is ready to put pen to paper on a bumper new deal this summer to commit his future to City.

The report claims the terms include a handsome pay increase with the player set to earn around £90,000-a-week once the contract is agreed.

A source is quoted as saying: “He is happy at Leicester that’s why he is playing so well.

“The future will take care of itself. Kelechi has another year on his contract but he believes the place where you play your best football - is the best place for you.

“Of course there is always interest in good players, especially goalscorers.

“But he wants to focus on his current form with so much still to play for with Leicester.”

Speaking after his side booked a date with Southampton in the semi-final, Rodgers said: “Kelechi has always contributed. Maybe his confidence was lower but he works so hard every day and always comes in and gives his all.

“You see his confidence now. He’s at the top of his game.

“It’s a different structure [up front]. Kelechi is probably best with someone up there with him. Those two are working very well.”
