Driver watches in horror as BMW goes up in flames

-

A CARE home manager watched in horror as her £40,000 BMW went up in flames.

The 44-year-old, who does not want to be named, pulled over in Bagworth Lane, Thornton, on Saturday afternoon when the 3 Series M Sport started to lose power.

“I saw smoke coming out of the glove box and then a yellow light came on which said ‘Impossible to drive’,” she said.

“I popped the bonnet and had a look. The engine was in flames.

“It was horrifying and surreal to see my car go up in flames. All I could do was stand and watch. It was awful.”

The woman said she was told by firefighters at the scene they believed the blaze was cause by an electrical fault.

She said the car was two-and-halfyears old and was covered by a three-year warranty.

“I paid a lot of money for that car and the service I have received from BMW has just not been good enough.

“They should have provided me with a courtesy car much sooner and not left it to me to ring them day after day to see what was happening.”

A BMW UK spokesman said: “We understand that events like this can be distressing and BMW takes any incident involving its vehicles very seriously.

“We were informed about this incident by the customer on Monday and organised a courtesy car which was delivered on Wednesday.

“To assist with the investigation, BMW has been in contact with the customer’s insurance company and is organising inspection of the vehicle to establish the root cause.”

Vehicle fires are very rare, but have many causes including external factors.
