Workers at Amazon are ‘given a voice’

-

THE UK’s biggest union has launched a campaign and whistle-blowing hotline for Amazon workers in a bid to protect staff.

Unite has launched Action on Amazon, which is demanding a “new deal” for workers.

The campaign is calling for a union to be formed and for staff to receive a greater share of Amazon’s profits.

The union says Amazon staff have been essential throughout the coronavirus pandemic, with the company doubling its profit in 2020 due lockdowns forcing shoppers to move online.

But it claims Amazon is not doing enough to protect and support its staff.

Unions are also calling on Amazon to improve working conditions in their warehouses, with events such as Prime Day allegedly pushing workers to their limits and beyond.

Amazon Kegworth at East Midlands Airport and another fulfillment centre near Coalville employ thousands of people.

A spokesperson for Amazon said: “We already offer our employees excellent pay, excellent benefits and excellent opportunities for career growth, all while working in a safe, modern work environment.

“Our competitive wages start at £9.70 or £10.80 per hour depending on location.

“We have created 10,000 new permanent roles across the UK in 2020 and our people have played a critical role in serving customers in these unprecedented times.” ■■Unite’s whistle-blowing hotline is 08000 141 461.
