Suspicious device seen on road
POLICE briefly closed a road near East Midlands Airport after a member of the public reported a suspicious device on a manhole cover.
Officers shut the stretch of the A453 between the DHL Island and the entrance to the airport on Sunday.
Drivers were advised by police to use an alternative route while police investigated. The force tweeted that the road was closed at 11.36am but reopened after the device was identified at 11.44am.
A police spokesman said: “On Sunday, a member of the public contacted police having seen what they believed to be a suspicious device on a manhole cover on the A453.
“In the interest of public and police safety, the road was closed for a short time while officers attended the area.
“Following inquiries with Severn Trent, the device was found to be connected to a water flow meter and the road was reopened.”
A Severn Trent spokesman said: “We have thousands of sensors in our network which help us monitor flows of water and waste water.”
