Cyclists are warned to dismount in town after near-misses

-

PEDESTRIANS have reported having near misses with cyclists flouting no-cycling rules in a pedestrianised town centre.

Several incidents took place in Hinckley on Tuesday, with cyclists almost hitting walkers, according to Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council.

Police responded to reports and spoke to several people on bikes.

According to the rules, cyclists are required to dismount in Castle Street, the main shopping street of the town.

A council spokesman said: “With the sun out, the town centre is becoming busier with pedestrians making it more difficult for cyclists to navigate through town centre pedestrian areas safely.

“Anyone cycling in pedestrian areas where cycling is prohibited will be approached and asked to dismount.”

The town centre is patrolled by council staff to assist visitors and help people follow the Covid regulations.

Anyone cycling to the town centre for shopping is urged to either walk with their bicycle or secure it in one of the cycling racks. Routes are also available which go around the pedestrianised area, rather than through it.

The council has also issued a warning after littering in the area’s parks over recent days. All town parks have seen an increase, with Richmond Park, Clarendon Park, Queen’s Park and Wykin Park the worst affected, as well as Burbage Common.
