Travellers move on from town sports site

A GROUP of travellers have moved on after being ordered to leave a camp set up in a sports club car park.

About 10 caravans and a number of vehicles arrived on Tuesday in the car park shared by Harborough Town FC and Market Harborough RFC, off Northampton Road in the town.

Police were informed of their presence and visited the site on Wednesday morning and told the group they had to leave the site by 6pm on Thursday.

A police spokesman said: “Officers were aware of an unauthorised encampment set up at a sports ground in Northampton Road, Market Harborough.”

Officers said they had consulted with the Multi-Agency Travellers Unit before serving the notice to leave.

A spokesman for Harborough District Council, which owns the land, said they had liaised with police to resolve the issue and monitored the situation.
