HOW BIG WILL THIS WIN BE?
RODGERS HAILS HUGE STEP TO CHAMPIONS LEAGUE PLACE
LEICESTER City have taken a “huge step” towards Champions League qualification, a proud Brendan Rodgers said after his side left Old Trafford with three points.
Despite the disappointment of their deflating defeat to Newcastle, City stood up strong to clinch what could be the most important victory in their pursuit of a top four spot.
City are now eight points clear of West Ham and nine away from Liverpool. Four points will guarantee Champions League, but if their rivals slip up over the next week, it could be fewer.
“It was a huge step [towards the Champions League], Rodgers said after the 2-1 victory. “I am so proud of the team.
“Once we scored we went sloppy and gave the ball away too easily which encouraged them. In the second half we were much better and restricted them.
“The players have definitely overachieved with all the big teams around. Now we can really enjoy the final at the weekend.”
While it was Caglar Soyuncu who scored the winner, local lad Luke Thomas scored the opener with a stunning volley and Rodgers said it will be one the teenager never forgets.
“It was an unbelievable finish,” Rodgers said. “It was first class. He’s a courageous little guy as well.
“His goal, he will never forget that. It’s a special night for him.”
