A WEST Highland Terrier was killed by a larger dog after it jumped over a fence from a neighbouring garden.

The terrier was mauled to death by an escaped two-year-old Dogue de Bordeaux cross.

Leicester magistrates heard the attack happened on February 24 this year in Westfield Avenue, Countesthorpe.

The Dogue de Bordeaux’s owner, Jonas Coltman, appeared at court after Blaby District Council applied for a dog control order after the incident.

Mr Coltman was ordered to muzzle the dog while out in public and keep the dog secure within his own property.

The magistrates’ court judge ruled against Mr Coltman’s claim that the Dog Control Order was not necessary and granted a permanent order against the dog.

Failure to comply with a Dog Control Order can lead to a criminal conviction, fine and potential ban from keeping animals.

After the hearing, Councillor Sharon Coe, portfolio holder for health, wellbeing and regulatory services, said: “We are pleased with this ruling as the out-of-control actions of this dog have caused heartache for one owner through the loss of their beloved pet.

“It is our responsibility to take the action we feel necessary to prevent any more incidents of this nature occurring to protect both residents and their pets.”
