ASK DIARMUID
QPlease could you tell me what this shrub is? It is in my mum’s garden and I cannot remember planting it. I’ve looked in books and online for the blossom but have drawn a blank.

AThat looks like Viburnum farreri to me – the tubular flowers, pleated leaves and upright habit all fit the bill. It’s one of the best winter-flowering shrubs and its
perfume is unparalleled, so take a sniff. If it smells gorgeous, then it’s one of the scented viburnums!
