Cricketers call last orders at village pub

-

PROFESSIONAL cricketers Stuart Broad and Harry Gurney have revealed their decision not to renew the lease on one of the county pubs their company has been running.

The Three Crowns, in Wymeswold, near Loughborough, was the first pub to be opened by the Cat and Wickets pub company, in August 2016.

However, with the five-year lease set to expire on May 24, the duo have now decided that they will not be renewing it.

Talking about the decision, Mr Gurney told the Mercury: “After being in the industry for a few years now, we have developed a set of criteria for identification of pubs.

“The Three Crowns no longer fits those criteria and therefore, with a heavy heart, we have decided not to extend the lease.”

A statement posted on the pub’s Facebook page said that the decision came after a “turbulent 18 months for the hospitality industry”, which involved lengthy periods of closure for the pub due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The statement went on to thank customers, saying: “It has been our pleasure to serve you over the last five years and we thank you so much for your support.” There is a strong possibility that further Cat and Wickets venues will be opened in the future, but for now, the duo will be focusing on their other Leicestershire pub - The Tap at Run at Upper Broughton, near Melton.

The country pub and kitchen, which launched in September 2018, is set to reopen for indoor dining next Wednesday, May 19.
