AUCTIONEERS ESTIMATE THEY COULD GO FOR UP TO £12,000

A SELECTION of rare coins found in a Leicester home have been estimated to be worth up to £12,000.

The coins were inherited by a family who live in Cropston, who recently took them to be valued.

A coin and banknote valuer at Hansons Auctioneers discovered the coins were part of a rare collection produced to commemorate the coronation of George VI.

Valuer William Haywood confirmed the coins are a “1937 specimen set with plain edge”.

He said: “There were only 5,001 minted of each coin and only 1,000 of this particular set.”

Comparing them to those already on the market and with his knowledge of what has sold before, Mr Haywood valued the set as being worth between £10,000 and £12,000.

He said: “They are part of a large collection of old and modern proof sets, the best collection I’ve ever seen.”

According to the Gold Sovereign Expert website, the four-coin proof Sovereign sets comprised the £5

Crown, double sovereign, full sovereign and half sovereign.

A statement reads: “Over the years, many of these sets have been split up and the coins sold separately.

“Of all the four coins in the set, the sovereign commands the highest price to gold content ratio.” The rarity of the coins is due to their plain edge, rather than the usual milled edge seen on all other sovereigns.

According the site, George VI edge proof sovereigns are “always in demand”.

It said: “Minor scratches and scuffs can affect the value of this coin quite significantly.”

The set is due to be sold on Friday, August 27 in a Hansons coins and banknotes auction.
