Pair got first winner’s medals playing for City

-

IT was interesting to see the picture of the City captain Norman Plummer shaking hands with Wolves captain Billy Wright at the 1949 FA Cup final in the Mercury’s souvenir feature.

I wonder how many City fans know that Billy Wright scored a goal to win the first trophy of his glittering career playing FOR Leicester?

After war broke out in 1939 so many of Wolves’ senior players enlisted for military service that the club was unable to compete in the 1940-41 season.

So 16-year-old Billy Wright and 17-year-old Jimmy Mullen (both future England internationals) were loaned to Leicester City. Wright and Mullen both went on to win the FA Cup (in 1949) and the League Championship (three times) with Wolves.

But they each got their first winner’s medals playing for Leicester in a 2-0 victory against Walsall in the final of the Midland War Cup 1941, in which they also scored the two goals.
