Buy travel cover before you fly
If you’re taking a chance on a foreign holiday in these uncertain times, make sure you buy travel insurance the moment you book. That way you have protection if you need to cancel before you travel, due to accident, illness or other threats such as redundancy.
Kevin Pratt, insurance expert at Forbes Advisor UK, says: “Travel
insurance will cover you against cancellation, delays, lost baggage and medical emergencies.”
Check policies carefully, though, and don’t just go for the cheapest, as cover varies. Many won’t offer refunds if you cancel after catching Covid, although some offer protection for an extra premium.
For added peace of mind, check if your tour operator or travel agent
will allow you to change dates free of charge, if the pandemic messes up your plans.
Pratt says remember to inform your insurers any pre-existing medical conditions, or it could reject a claim. And, while the European Health Insurance Card has been replaced with the Global Heath Insurance Card (GHIC), post-Brexit, it is no substitute for insurance.
