Wes hints that cup final may be his swansong if so, what a way to go!

LEICESTER City’s FA Cup final win may well be the swansong of Wes Morgan’s career, with the club captain hinting at retirement at the end of the season, writes Jordan Blackwell.

The title-winning skipper played the final few minutes of City’s maiden FA Cup triumph, overcoming a long-term back problem to step onto the field at Wembley and make his first appearance since December.

He is out of contract this summer and, at 37, he admits he may not have any more seasons in him.

If this is to be the final game of his career, it will cap a glorious neardecade at City.

Discussing his future after City’s triumph on Saturday, Morgan said: “Nothing’s been announced yet, I need to discuss it with the club, but I don’t think I’ve got too many more miles on the clock, we’ll say that.”

Saturday’s showpiece was one that Morgan did not anticipate appearing in, given his struggles with back pain over the past six months.

He last played in mid-December, the final eight minutes of a 2-0 Europa League win over AEK Athens, with Rodgers admitting in January that his captain was no longer able to make it through full matches.

“I can’t believe it,” he said. “Did this really happen? I’m just in shock.

“Forty-eight hours ago I didn’t think this would happen. I wasn’t sure if I was going to make the squad.

“The gaffer asked me if I could make it on the bench and I said if I’m needed for the last 10 minutes, I’ll be available.

“We were 1-0 up and the last thing I expected a week ago was to be playing again, but I came on and now I’ve won an FA Cup.

“It shows our intentions. We entered the Premier League six or seven years ago, and we’ve had ups and downs. But we’ve got a real direction now since the gaffer took over. We have an identity.

“We know what we want to achieve, and if we want to do that we’ve got to start winning trophies.”

There could be more to achieve and more to celebrate tomorrow when City take on Chelsea again, knowing victory will seal their return to the Champions League.

“We’re in a strong position, but it’s not job done yet,” Morgan warned.
