Leicester Mercury

PLAYER RATINGS v HARLEQUINS

-

FREDDIE STEWARD: Dependable when called upon in defence, making a brilliant try-saving tackle on Luke Northmore into touch just after halftime. 6/10

GUY PORTER: Missed a key tackle on Tyrone Green that led to Nathan Earle’s score and was then penalised for taking Northmore in the air as he attempted to atone for his error. With two minutes to play, he was caught off his feet at a breakdown with Tigers on the attack, which handed the visitors an opportunity to steal victory. 5/10

MATT SCOTT: Won an early turnover penalty and opened the scoring with a perfectly timed run onto a Ford pass in a sensational start from the Scottish international. Was also in the right place to take advantage of a magical Nadolo offload and put in a clever grubber that forced Smith into a very rushed clearance. Made the most metres (39) of any Tiger. 8/10

DAN KELLY: Showed well-timed aggression at the breakdown to push past the ball and clear out Danny Care. However, he immediately undid his good work by conceding a penalty for being in front of the kicker. Made 11 tackles, the most from a Leicester back, as he and Scott put up a strong showing against Quins’ very dangerous back-division. 7/10

NEMANI NADOLO: He went on a thundering run in the build-up to Leicester’s first try after being fed by Ford. Yet, it was in defence that the Fijian was most impactful. He dragged the dangerous Green to the ground, which enabled Scott to win an early penalty. After the break, Nadolo put in a crunching tackle that forced Quins back behind the gainline and forced a turnover. 8/10

GEORGE FORD: An eagerlyanticipated duel with Smith never fully materialised, as both fly-halves displayed their quality without ever taking control of the game. Ford did land an early blow with a beautifully timed, delayed pass that sent Scott in to open the scoring, before a pinpoint kick to the corner handed his pack a five-metre line-out which Tom Youngs scored from. Another accomplished display which must have pleased the watching Eddie Jones. 8/10

BEN YOUNGS: Improved after knocking on from the first line-out of the afternoon. Looked to inject tempo even when his side was down to 13 men with a quick tap that caught the Quins defence unaware and forced them to concede another penalty for not rolling. 6/10

ELLIS GENGE: A typically eventful outing for the Baby Rhino. Genge barrelled over from a tap penalty to score Leicester’s second try and secured the four-try bonus point just before half-time with another closerange effort. Also made a lovely offload in the build-up to his second score. Was sin-binned in between his two scores after his clear out on Jack

Kenningham was adjudged to have struck the openside in the head. 8/10

TOM YOUNGS: Penalised for a needless late tackle into the back of James Lang. Made amends later in the first half by touching down for his fifth try of the season from the back of a barnstorming maul. 7/10

DAN COLE: Sent to the bin for a lastditch but cynical attempt to bring down a charging Quins drive. Referee Luke Pearce awarded the visitors a penalty try to make the infringement a very costly one. 6/10

HARRY WELLS: Largely reliable at the line-out, Wells also carried well and made crucial metres in the build-up to Genge’s second try moments before the interval. Very solid in defence, his 12 tackles were the second-most by a Tigers player. 7/10

CALUM GREEN: Got off to a poor start with an inaccurate tap-down from the first line-out which Ben Youngs fumbled, before he compounded the error by diving on the ball in an offside position. Grew into the game, dealt with restarts well and played the full 80 minutes. 6/10

GEORGE MARTIN: Another strong performance from the teenager. Set the tone with an early line-out steal and made more tackles (14) than any player on either side. Deserves plenty of the credit for Tom Youngs’ try, as he intelligently peeled off with his captain and supported the ball-carrier all the way to the line. 8/10

TOMMY REFFELL: Made a superb low tackle on Alex Dombrandt that allowed Wells to win a penalty. The infringement provided Tigers with the platform from which Genge would score his first try. With his side down to 13, the Welshman won a crucial penalty at the breakdown which allowed Ford to add to the Tigers lead and kill precious time off the sin bin clock. Reffell looks to have re-established himself as a key player ahead of Friday’s final. 8/10

JASPER WIESE: Penalised for double movement from his first carry from the back of the line-out. The South African’s eight carries were the most by a Leicester player. Went down either side of half-time with an ankle problem that required heavy strapping. Tigers will hope his departure on 48 minutes was merely precautionary. 7/10
