Evans ruled out of trip to Chelsea

-

LEICESTER City centre-back Jonny Evans will miss the club’s Champions League showdown with Chelsea tonight after limping off during the FA Cup final, writes Jordan Blackwell.

Evans has been struggling with a heel injury for a few weeks, and while he started at Wembley, he was substituted after half an hour, and will now sit out the game at Stamford Bridge.

He will attempt to make a comeback for the final game of the season at home to Tottenham, which City will need to win for a top-four spot if they fail to get the three points at Chelsea.

Playing through injury, Evans was one of City’s best players in April, scoring in the games against West Brom and Southampton, but was withdrawn before kick-off against Newcastle, then watched from the stands at Manchester United.

He returned to the side in the FA Cup final but hobbled off after 30 minutes.

“He won’t play in the game, he’ll struggle for that,” manager Brendan Rodgers said of Evans during his pre-match press conference yesterday.

“So we’ll see what he’s like for next weekend, but he’ll be ruled out for tomorrow.”

Apart from long-term absentees James Justin and Harvey Barnes, there is only one concern for Rodgers with Cengiz Under possibly out with a hip problem.

With only a week to go in the season, the on-loan winger may now have played his final game for the club as he is set to return to Roma in the summer.

While Rodgers expects the rest of his players to be available, their fitness will need to be assessed, with only 72 hours between the FA Cup final and the game at Chelsea.

The City boss was slightly peeved the game was not tomorrow to give his side an extra day to recover.

“It’s a quick turnaround and there’s work to be done,” said Rodgers.

“We talked about it beforehand, we knew we didn’t have any favours in the fixtures.

“We could have played on the Wednesday, with not playing until the Sunday (against Spurs) but we’re playing on the Tuesday, so ultimately you have to be ready and prepared.”
