MOTORISTS have been warned to expect three months of traffic disruption as work gets under way on a town bypass.

County Hall highways engineers have embarked on repairs on the A47 Dodwell’s Road/Normandy Way Hinckley bypass.

Work between the A5 roundabout near McDonald’s and the roundabout connecting with Roston Drive started on Monday.

Officials said the maintenance will be carried out in phases to reduce delays to both road users and lessen the impact on businesses.

Where roads are closed, diversions will be in place.

Contractor Hanson is carrying out the work on behalf of Leicestershire County Council.

The first part of the project will be to waterproof the canal bridge, meaning a 24-hour closure of Dodwells Road between Brindley Road and Roston Drive.

This first phase work is expected to be completed by Sunday, June 27.

Work will then begin on footpaths, with staged overnight road closures between 8pm and 6am on different stretches of the road.

Road resurfacing is scheduled to take place in September – again in phases, with overnight road closures.

County council cabinet member for highways and transport, Ozzy O’Shea, said: “The improvements being carried out on the A47 Dodwells Road are the final part of our bypass project

“We’d like to thank residents and businesses for their co-operation and support and we would ask motorists to bear with us as we complete the final stage of this programme which will mean improved journeys for us all.”

The work is being paid for with £5 million from the Challenge Fund’ allocated by the Department of Transport to assist with Covid-19 recovery.
