Remembering Glastonbury – minus the mud
SADLY there’s no actual Glastonbury this year, so no opportunity to watch muddy campers dancing in the rain, justifying why it’s OK that you missed out on tickets.
In a bid to give us a Glasto vibe, this evening kicks off a Glastonbury Experience, on telly all weekend, with documentaries and reruns of some of the best ever sets.
We can expect to see programmes about the legends of Glastonbury, backstage at Worthy Farm and 21st century Glastonbury, as well as sets including Kylie in 2019 and Arctic Monkeys in 2013.
But tonight begins on BBC2 at 9pm with Glastonbury in the 90s – arguably a defining decade, from the arrival of Britpop to extreme weather conditions.
The programme is voiced by Skin from Skunk Anansie, who were the last Glastonbury headliners of the decade.
Meanwhile, over on BBC4 at 9pm is Al Green’s 1999 set. The American soul legend took to the Pyramid Stage and performed classics such as Let’s Stay Together, If You Ever Change Your Mind and Take Me To The River.
Immediately afterwards, at 10pm, is Best Of Glastonbury 1998, with highlights from one of the muddiest festivals on record.
This programme includes performances from Robbie Williams, The Lightning Seeds, Foo Fighters, Tricky, Catatonia, James, Blur, and Tony Bennett.
Over on BBC2 at 10pm is Radiohead at Glastonbury 1997, billed as one of the greatest sets in the festival’s entire 40 years.
Then R.E.M as Glastonbury 1999 hits BBC2 at 11pm, while on BBC4 is Best Of Glastonbury 1999. A musical hit of pure nostalgia.
