Eight from Olympics Team GB isolating

SIX athletes and two staff members from the Great Britain athletics team are isolating in Tokyo after being identified as close contacts of an individual who subsequent­ly tested positive for Covid-19, the British Olympic Associatio­n has announced.

According to a statement, the individual who has tested positive is not a member of the Team GB delegation but was a close contact during their flight to Japan on Thursday.

The eight concerned all tested negative at the airport and have continued to test negative since.

Team GB’s chef de mission Mark England said: “This is disappoint­ing news for the athletes and staff, but we absolutely respect the protocols in place.

“We will offer them every support during this period and we are hopeful that they will be able to resume training again soon.”

Earlier, two South African football players were the first to test positive for coronaviru­s in the Olympic Village.

The pair, who were named by the South African Football Associatio­n as Thabiso Monyane and Kamohelo Mahlatsi, are among 10 Gamesrelat­ed cases announced on Sunday. ■■Liam Broady has been handed a place in the men’s singles at Tokyo, the British Olympic Associatio­n has announced.

The British number five will link up with the Team GB tennis squad in Japan after being offered a spot by the Internatio­nal Tennis Federation based on his world ranking of 141.

The 27-year-old will join Andy and Jamie Murray, Neal Skupski, Joe Salisbury and Heather Watson in the group.

Team GB tennis team leader Iain Bates said: “This is brilliant news for Liam and I am delighted he is able to take up the spot and represent Team GB at his first Olympic Games in Tokyo.

“Thanks to the BOA and ITF for their hard work behind the scenes to ensure that Liam was able to take advantage of this opportunit­y.”

Dan Evans and Johanna Konta were in the original squad but withdrew after testing positive.
