Second arrest in moped mugging
A SECOND man has been arrested on suspicion of robbery after a woman was mugged in a Leicester street last week.
Two people on a moped are reported to have dragged the woman to the ground after one of them grabbed her handbag as they rode past her in Melton Road, in Belgrave.
Police said a 23-year-old man, from Leicester, was the second person to be arrested following the incident, which happened on Wednesday, July 14.
He was detained last Friday after a 19-year-old man had been arrested earlier that day, also on suspicion of robbery.
Both have since been released on bail while inquiries continue.
Police issued an appeal for witnesses after the woman was targeted close to the junction with Shaftesbury Avenue shortly before 5pm.
After pulling the woman to the ground, the pair drove off.
The victim, who is in her 50s, was taken to hospital where she was treated for injuries that were not “life-threatening or life-changing”, according to police at the time.
A force spokesperson said: “The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone who has any information and who has not yet contacted police is urged to do so.”
In previous years, a number of city neighbourhoods, including Belgrave and Spinney Hills, have seen spates of snatch-style robberies, some carried out by thieves on bikes and targeting women for gold chains.
Where possible, police suggest people should avoid wearing expensive gold items when out in public. Earlier this year, officers urged people to cover necklaces with a scarf if they choose to wear them while out and about.
