A HISTORIC building in Leicester’s London Road could be turned into student flats

An application submitted to Leicester City Council details plans to convert the early 19th century, grade II-listed building from office space to accommodation.

The building, at 170 London Road, would be converted into six one-bedroom apartments for students if the plan is approved.

The stairwell, communal room, garden room and windows all have high levels of “heritage significance”, and the developer intends to have these features “retained or restored”, according to the planning documents filed with the council. The application states work on the building would “maintain the character and appearance of the house, thus protecting the special architecture and historic interest of the area”.

The building overlooks Victoria Park and is situated on the Evington Footway, an ancient path believed to follow the line of a Roman road.

The city council received the application in June and is consulting on the plans. It has set a target of September 1 for a decision to be made.
