Covid passports for nightclubs? Readers divided
GOVERNMENT SAYS PROOF OF JABS NEEDED NEXT MONTH
THE government has suggested proof of vaccination may be needed to enter nightclubs from next month.
The issue has proved controversial, with Tory MPs including North West Leicestershire member Andrew Bridgen this week calling for the return of Parliament to debate Covid passports.
Some commentators on the Mercury’s Facebook page have also criticised the plan for nightclubs.
Margaret Wright said it would put a “burden” on the owner or licensee.
She said: “They’ve already lost money hand over fist with lockdowns and they might have to turn away much-needed custom. They’ve suffered enough.
“Plus, it could lead to nasty encounters as not everyone takes no for an answer.”
Pete Terry said: “Doesn’t seem that Wembley had them for 60,000 people – why should a relatively small nightclub? Seems to me the rules are out the window when football is involved.”
Layla-Beth Stephens said: “No. Vaccine isn’t mandatory so why punish those who choose not to have it?”
Others said vaccine passports would be “singling out” younger people and amount to discrimination.
Helen Cox said: “If we do this, what about places you visit more frequently, like the supermarkets? Where would it end?”
However, Alison Toward said: “Yes. It’s for the benefit of all.”
“Definitely yes. I want to feel safe when I go out,” Ian Radford said.
Ben Smiler Cherry said: “Yes and rapid test before admission.”
Alex Meng said: “Yes. I do not want to be around unvaccinated people, they are more contagious.”
