Man injured in stabbing

CITY CENTRE STREET CORDONED OFF AFTER INCIDENT IN THE EARLY HOURS

DETECTIVES investigat­ing an attack on a man in Leicester city centre in the early hours have confirmed the incident was a stabbing.

The casualty was taken to Leicester Royal Infirmary following a confrontat­ion near the Taco Bell restaurant in Gallowtree Gate overnight.

Police said emergency services were called to the scene at about 1.45am after reports that a man had been injured in the street.

The area was the closed off for several hours while forensic scene of crime officers combed the area for evidence.

A spokesman for the force said: “We can confirm it was a stabbing.”

A 30-year-old man from Leicester was later arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm. He remained in custody at the time of publicatio­n.

East Midlands Ambulance Services took the injured man to Leicester Royal Infirmary and he has since been discharged.

The window of the Taco Bell was smashed, but it is not known whether this is linked to the incident.

A notice in the restaurant’s window gave a later than usual opening time and said: “Apologies for the inconvenie­nce.”

Staff at Taco Bell declined to comment.

Ali Khan, who works in iMobile across the road, said: “There was some police here at 9am when we arrived.

“They left at about 10.30am. I think someone was hurt because there was a lot of blood on the ground.

“It looked quite fresh as if whatever happened was earlier this morning. Police did a forensic investigat­ion and left.”

A police spokespers­on said inquiries into the incident were ongoing and confirmed the injured man had been discharged from hospital.
