What a season! Sansome is county seniors champ

ANOTHER TROPHY IN 40TH YEAR AS A COUNTY GOLFER

-

STEVE Sansome (Birstall) has added another trophy to his haul in his milestone season as he celebrates 40 years as a county golfer, writes Jennifer Prentice.

Sansome has been crowned the new county seniors champion after winning the title at Luffenham Heath with his 73 card, well clear of his closest challengers.

Earlier this summer, he became Leicestershire and Rutland amateur champion for the second time and, a few days before this event, he was joint winner of the Midland Golf Union senior title.

Andy Pimm (Lingdale) was runner-up on 76 on local rule from Paul Jelly (Kibworth).

There were also age group and team awards.

Jonathan Perry of the host club, also with 76, headed the 55-59 years division with Ian Preston (Longcliffe) taking the net handicap with his 72 net card.

Steve Lewis (Kibworth) was also round in 76 to lead the 60-64 age group, when Kevin Reed (Charnwood Forest) 70 net won the handicap prize.

Phil Gray (Birstall) was also round in 76 to top the 65-69 age division, with Peter Wynn (Glen Gorse) 70 net winning that section. In the 70-plus years, Clive Patrick (Lingdale) with his 81 return was the scratch winner, on countback from David Campsey (Cosby), whose 71 net claimed the handicap prize. Birstall through Sansome 73, Gray 76 and Graham Marshall 79 was the winning team with their 228 aggregate.

LEICESTERSHIRE and Rutland county first and second team golfers clashed with Lincolnshire in Anglian League fixtures at the weekend.

The firsts drew 6-all at Hinckley and the seconds, away at Cleethorpes, won 7-5.

At Hinckley, the firsts trailed 2-1, one halved, after the opening foursomes which left them a tough task in the singles.

But they came through with determination and style in some close encounters, winning the series 4-3, with one halved.

County captain James Billingham (Cosby) said: “It was an extremely close game with the odds changing in each side’s favour during the course of the day. So a draw was a fair indication of the play.”

The second team won the foursomes 2-1, with one halved, at Cleethorpes and ran out 3-2, with three halved in the singles, for their overall success.

Jay Sheridan (Lutterworth), seconds captain, said: “This win, our second of the league season, keeps us in contention and it was especially pleasing to win away.”
