CITY PLUNGED INTO CRISIS AT THE BACK AFTER FOFANA SUFFERS BAD ANKLE INJURY

-

LEICESTER City have been dealt an untimely blow as centre-back Wesley Fofana suffered a serious injury in their 3-2 victory over Villarreal, writes Jordan Blackwell.

The defender was last night being taken to hospital to be assessed after what appeared to be a dislocation or break to his leg.

With the new Premier League season just over a week away, City will now be forced into the transfer market to sign a new centrehalf.

Fofana was in immediate pain on the hour mark after a scissor challenge by Villarreal forward

Fernando Nino, the Frenchman immediately calling to the bench, with physios and paramedics rushing on.

After five minutes of treatment, Fofana was stretchered off to a standing ovation from the 17,000-strong crowd at the King Power Stadium.

The City players looked distraught at their stricken teammate, in particular centre-back partner Caglar Soyuncu, who was crouched down with his head in his hands.

With a long absence expected, City will now have to buy a centrehalf before the window closes at the end of August.

City were already mulling over bringing in a centre-back recruit with Jonny Evans still nursing a foot problem that kept him out of the end of last season, but the situation is now more desperate.

Without a signing, City will likely line up with either Daniel Amartey or Filip Benkovic next to Soyuncu in the Community Shield on Saturday, unless Wilfred Ndidi drops back into defence as he did last season, allowing Boubakary Soumare to come into midfield.

Fofana’s injury marred the game, which City won thanks to goals from Soyuncu, Harvey Barnes and Ayoze Perez.
