A DOG has suddenly died after eating a suspected poisoned substance it picked up in a park.

The 12-year-old chocolate labrador came across the item in Tilton Road Park, Burbage, on Monday, according to a Facebook post.

He became sick the following morning and, over the next 48 hours his condition deteriorated, and he died of heart failure on Thursday afternoon.

The owner posted on the Spotted Hinckley Facebook page to warn other walkers to take care when out with their dogs.

They said in the message: “The vets did lots of investigations and were unable to find the cause of why he became so poorly so quickly, so poisoning is a possibility.

“Please watch your dogs extra carefully in this park as we wouldn’t want anyone to go through what we have in the last 48 hours.”

Last month, a Hinckley dog owner discovered someone had left cooked sausages containing a green substance thought to be poison in his garden overnight.

Mike Mansfield, of Morland Drive, found the sausages, which had been left by his side gate, at 6.30am on July 26.

He said he regularly walks his dogs around the area and Wykin Park, and they are well known and liked by other dog walkers.

He reported the incident to police.

In December, a quantity of poisoned bacon and crisps was recovered from Clarendon Park, in the town.

Concerns have also been raised recently about poisoned bait being left in other parks.

In mid-June, a dog owner had to take their dog to the vets after it had eaten a piece of “poisoned meat” in Leicester’s Knighton Park.

There were similar reports several months ago about suspicious substances being found in Watermead Park.
