VESTERGAARD BACK ON CITY’S RADAR

VESTERGAARD BACK ON RADAR AFTER EVANS AND FOFANA INJURIES

LEICESTER City’s grand transfer plan will not be completed this summer, Brendan Rodgers has said.

City have so far added three players to their ranks this summer, bringing in highly-rated duo Patson Daka and Boubakary Soumare alongside experienced England international Ryan Bertrand.

Rodgers is pleased with the renewed depth his squad has, but believes reaching a point where he is totally satisfied with the quality available to him requires more transfer windows.

That does not mean City’s incoming business is done for the summer just yet, with the club pushing to bring in a new centreback following injuries to Wesley Fofana and Jonny Evans.

Jannik Vestergaard, who City pursued 18 months ago, is back on the club’s radar.

The 29-year-old Danish defender has one year left on his deal with Southampton, and is said to be valued at between £15 million and £20 million.

Rodgers would hope the arrival of Vestergaard or a different centre-back helps the club avoid a situation similar to the end of last season. Asked if he felt the club now had the depth to cope with injuries, Rodgers said: “It’s increasing the quality. That’s important, but it’s ongoing. You’re never going to do that in one or two windows. “We’ve looked to do that this summer and we will look to continue doing it but it’s more the level of quality as opposed to the numbers we’ve brought in.

“We lost two players with big experience in Wes (Morgan) and Christian (Fuchs) and we’ve replaced them with Ryan, who has bags of experience in the Premier League and the highest level.

“But we’ve also brought in two young and exciting players (Daka and Soumare) we can develop but also who are game ready and who’ve got experience.

“So it’s continually step-by-step improving that.

“Look at the last game of last season (the 4-2 defeat to Tottenham), we had players out and then very quickly in the game Wesley is off injured and we had to move Wilf (Ndidi) to centre-half so it was difficult for us at the end.

“But that’s the constant challenge we have. It also shows how well the players have done to fight right at the very end.”
