Cartwright outfoxes his rivals to claim title

COSBY GOLFER’S SECOND TROPHY OF THE SEASON

-

COBY Cartwright (Cosby) won his second county amateur major title of the season when he finished first in the Leicestershire Fox open scratch tournament at Willesley Park GC, writes Jennifer Prentice.

The cool and windy conditions provided a tough test for the high quality field of golfers from across the region.

Cartwright ended on 4-under-par 136 after following his level par 70 opening round, with a storming 4-under-66 in his second session of the Midland Golf Union Order of Merit counting competition.

He finished three strokes clear of a past winner Richard Wale (The Leicestershire) on 69-70-139, with Zarak Curley (Leek), who hit two level par 70s for 140, coming third.

Earlier in the season, Cartwright won the county golf union’s 72-holes Robin Fraser Trophy played on two days on two different courses.

He won that event for the second time with a 54-holes 3-under-par 207 at The Leicestershire and Longcliffe GCs.

The event was cut from the traditional 72 holes to three rounds this year due to lockdown restrictions.

Cartwright was in a group on level par after the first round of the Leicestershire Fox, with two birdies and two bogeys on his card.

John Fairbrother (Cosby) and Jake Dandy (Lingdale) led the way with their 2-under 68 cards, with Wale in third place.

There were two more alongside Cartwright on 70 at halfway – county captain James Billingham (Cosby), a past winner of the Fox, and Curley.

But in round two Cartwright, after a bogey at the second, birdied the next two holes, and added another birdie at 8, before he dropped another shot at the ninth for 1-under 35 at the turn.

Coming back, he had a run of three birdies in quick succession from the 14th for a 3-under 31 and a 66 winning total.

County president Phil Askew (Rothley Park) presented the winners with their awards and congratulated them on their achievements.
