Pub’s landlady punched by man found urinating against the wall

A PUB landlady says she was punched in the face for telling a customer to leave when she caught him urinating on the outside wall.

Sharon Mullaney, 51, runs the 1852 Brewery Co pub, in Wigston with her husband, Carl, 51.

Since taking over the pub four years ago, she said the couple have transformed it from a place with a “bad reputation” into a thriving, family-friendly community pub.

But when she was leaving the pub last Saturday, she called out a man urinating on the outdoor wall of her pub.

He reportedly retaliated by turning around and urinating on her.

She said she called him a “disgusting pig” and told him to leave, before grabbing her jacket and heading to her car.

There, she says she was confronted by the man’s friend, who threw his pint over the car, before throwing the glass and smashing it, causing shards to go into her vehicle.

Carl said: “Sharon was really shook up by the whole thing. She just didn’t expect it at all. This man chucked his pint at the car and it had smashed, sending glass everywhere and across to the passenger’s seat.

“Then, when she got out of the car in fear, he punched her in the face.

“He hit her so hard she still had a handprint on her face. It burst her nose and was bleeding badly. It really shook her up.

“He just stood there laughing afterwards. I ended up taking a picture and, after showing a few people, we got a name we could pass on to the police and he was later arrested.

“They weren’t regulars by any means – nobody had seen them in the pub before that night.

“We’ve done a lot of hard work these past few years to get rid of the bad reputation the pub had and make it a family-friendly, community pub. “We do a lot of work to support businesses and local people, and the area appreciates what we do. It’s just a shame a select few try to ruin it.”

A police spokesman said: “Police were called at about 7.30pm on Saturday, August 28 to Station Road, Wigston, following a report of an assault.

“It was reported a woman in her 50s had been in her car when a glass was thrown at the car, smashing inside the car.

“The glass did not hit the woman. “The woman got out of the car and was reported to have been punched to the face by a man, suffering facial injuries.

“A 30-year-old man of Wigston has been arrested on suspicion of assault and criminal damage in connection with the incident. “He has since been released on bail. Inquiries remain ongoing.”
