Three players win two age groups at county junior championships
RETURN OF EVENT AFTER YEAR’S GAP DUE TO PANDEMIC
THE county junior tennis championships have taken place after a year’s gap due to the Covid pandemic, writes Neil Phillips.
One of the best supported events in the country, there were 269 entries from across Leicestershire and Rutland, which involved the scheduling of 387 matches in 23 singles and doubles events over the week.
The finals were played out in front of appreciative audiences at the historic Leicestershire club in Stoneygate, one of the oldest tennis clubs in the world.
Highlights saw three players achieve the feats of winning two age groups in the same year.
Emily Pollard repeated her success of two years ago by lifting both the girls’ under-18 and under-16 singles titles.
Her sister, Charlotte Pollard, secured the under-14 and under-12 titles.
Meanwhile, Jack Burch, of Oadby Granville club, won the boys’ under-9 and under-8 singles.
Theo Coats and Thomas Giles slugged it out in both the under-18 and under-16 singles finals, with Coates taking the u18s title and Giles the u16s.
Junior tennis in the county is currently as strong as it’s been for several years and a number of the players competing had already represented the full senior county teams.
