Morgan knew Maguire was ‘too good’ to stay at club

-

WES Morgan knew Harry Maguire was “too good” for Leicester City before the centre-back made his world record move to Manchester United, writes Jordan Blackwell.

The former City skipper partnered Maguire for two seasons and could see he had the quality to reach the very top.

In 2019, Maguire moved to Old Trafford for £80 million, making him the world’s most expensive defender.

He is now captain of the Red Devils and continues to impress with England, scoring in the 4-0 win over Hungary on Thursday night.

Morgan is not surprised by his success.

“Harry’s been in the game for a while, and when he joined Leicester he kicked on to another level, to a point where I remember saying to myself that he’s probably too good for us,”

Morgan told Talksport. “I wasn’t surprised that a big, big club came in for him.

“He’s kept his high standards and his high level up and his impressive form for Man United and for England.

“I’m not surprised, I knew he had the capabilities. It’s just whether he could reproduce that and he has.”

Since Maguire’s departure, City have not had a regular in the England squad, with Harvey Barnes and James Maddison picking up a cap each.

Barnes perhaps would have been involved at the Euros if not for his injury, but Morgan says the winger needs to become more consistent.

“Barnsey will have two great games and then an average game, so he needs to improve in that sense. I’m expecting big things for him and he’s one of our main players that can produce something out of nothing.”
