Senior on a hot streak claims another crown
Champion of Champions triumph for sansome
STEVE Sansome’s stunning season continues. Playing his 40th season as a county golfer, the Birstall senior has seen his successes continue to mount, writes Jennifer Prentice.
At the weekend, he took the English Senior Champion of Champions crown at Woodhall Spa, headquarters of England Golf, with a pair of 2-under-par 71 rounds over the championship Hotchkin course for his 4-under-142 aggregate.
This also saw him receive the trophy for the leading Midland senior in action there.
Sansome claimed both the county men’s and county seniors titles this season, which qualified him for entry in the English Champion of Champions in both categories.
Choosing to play in the seniors, as he rather “fancied” his chances in this 36-hole tournament, his judgement proved sound and he played well over the two days to achieve his victory in a strong field.
This summer he also tied top in the Midland Seniors championship with Paul Wharton and, as usual, he has been a key member of the county first team for Anglian League and other matches, as well as in a string of stroke-play tournaments at men’s and seniors levels.
At Woodhall Spa he was presented with his trophies by Desmond Duffy, past president of England Golf, and by Kevin Whitfield-Green, the county director of tournaments, who is also Midland Golf Union chairman.
The county boys’ teenage “double” champion Charlie Box competed in the boys’ Champion of Champions.
Although he experienced some bunker problems early in his first round and carded 80, he played neatly in round two for level par 73 and his 153 total, gaining valuable high-level experience.
