Police and cyclists ride out with safety message
SHARE THE ROAD CAMPAIGN URGES EVERYONE TO BE CONSIDERATE
POLICE welcomed cycling club members for a ride to promote their Share the Road campaign.
Share the Road aims to reduce traffic accidents involving cyclists and other vulnerable road users by getting all road users to be more alert.
During the event, 37 cyclists from bike clubs put on Share the Road hivis vests and cycled from force headquarters in Enderby to the south east corner of the county and back again.
Jonathan Clarkson, Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland Road Safety Partnership spokesman, said it was also important that cyclists themselves stick to the rules to stay safe.
He said: “While the recent Share the Road ride proved to be a great success, we would like to remind all cyclists of the need to follow the Highway Code, especially around red traffic lights, ensuring they hav ing working lights if riding at night, having proper control of their bike and point 66 of the Highway code.”
Point 66 of the code covers:
■ Having both hands on the handlebars except when signalling or changing gear
■ Never riding more than two abreast, and riding in single file on narrow or busy roads and when riding around bends.
■ Being considerate of other road users.
Mr Clarkson said: “We would also like to take this opportunity to remind drivers to give motorcyclists, cyclists and horse riders at least as much room as you would when overtaking a car.”
As well as the free hi-vis vests, new roadside signs are being used to promote the Share the Road campaign.
The signs are being rolled out at numerous locations across the force area to highlight the presence of vulnerable road users such as cyclists, horse riders and pedestrians.
