CITY EVENT WILL FOLLOW WORLD MENTAL

- By STAFF REPORTER HEALTH DAY samaritans.org

A ROADSHOW to raise awareness of all the support services that exist for those who need to speak about their mental health rolls into town next week.

On Monday, Samaritans is running a roadshow event to raise awareness of local support services available to the community and to remind the public that whatever they are facing, Samaritans volunteers are there to listen around the clock.

The wellbeing event will also mark World Mental Health Day on Sunday, with volunteers reminding the public that they are there for anyone that needs someone, in line with this year’s awareness day theme, Mental Health in an Unequal World.

The challenges that people face up and down the country have been felt even more deeply over the past 18 months, as the pandemic has had a profound impact on the nation’s mental health.

Samaritans volunteers have provided emotional support more than 2.3 million times since social distancing restrictions began.

With restrictions lifting and continued change, many people may find returning to everyday life more challenging than others.

To help, volunteers from Leicester branch Samaritans will be at Humberstone Gate in Leicester city centre between 10am and 4pm on Monday to talk to people about their services and provide emotional support to anyone who may need it.

Sara Sheard, director of Samaritans of Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, said: “The pandemic’s challenges are continuing and they won’t immediately ease off with restrictions lifting. Therefore, it’s vitally important we do everything we can to help anyone who needs support.

“The volunteers are looking forward to being out within the community and talking to people at the roadshow.

“We’re here for anyone who needs a listening ear and we know how powerful human connection can be – both for the other person’s mental health and your own too.

“It’s important to reach out for a chat with someone you care about, whether in person or virtually – it’s about taking the time to be there for each other, which could potentially save a life.”
