Man held after biker killed in collision
MELTON Road in the city was closed after an overnight crash killed a motorcyclist.
Officers were called to the scene, near Rushey Fields shortly before 9pm on Wednesday, following reports a motorcyclist had collided with a lamppost.
The biker, a man in his 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene.
One man has since been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and driving while under the influence of drugs. He remained in custody yesterday. Police kept the road closed for most of Wednesday night and yesterday morning, only reopening the road at 7.23am.
Officers wrote on Twitter: “07:23, Melton Road and all associated side road closures have now been lifted. Thank you for your patience.”
Leicestershire Police are now appealing for anybody with information to come forward, including those the man may have been riding with.
Detective Sergeant Paul Hawkins, from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “From our early inquiries, we believe the motorcyclist was riding as part of a group and that he was travelling alongside other motorcycles.
“I would like those riders to come forward with any information they have.
“This collision happened on a main route in and out of Leicester and I am sure there will have been other people who saw what happened too.
“I am particularly keen to speak to anyone who was driving along Melton Road, close to Rushey Fields, at the time the collision occurred. If you have a dashcam in your vehicle, then please get in touch.
“I would also like to speak to anyone who saw the motorcycle prior to the collision occurring.”
