Woman is arrested after rooftop drama

-

A WOMAN was arrested after being on the roof of a city centre venue for several hours, police have confirmed.

Officers were called to the Haymarket Centre at about 4.40pm on Thursday after reports of a woman on the roof of the car park, pictured.

A number of road closures were put in place in the city centre as a precautionary measure while officers dealt with the situation.

The Haymarket junction of Belgrave Gate towards Argos and the Haymarket bus station was closed to pedestrians and vehicles, as well as the walkthrough via Tesco.

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service also attended and an aerial ladder was deployed to assist police officers who were talking to the woman.

An East Midlands Ambulance crew was also at the scene.

The road closures remained in place for several hours while the situation was handled.

A police spokeswoman later confirmed that the woman came down of her own accord at 8.15pm and the cordon was lifted shortly afterwards.

The woman was arrested on suspicion of causing a public nuisance, the force said.
