Be aware of potential threats, police tell councillors and MPs
INTERIM ADVICE AS EXTRA SECURITY MEASURES ARE CONSIDERED FORLOCALLY-ELECTED OFFICIALS
POLICE have issued security advice to locally-elected officials following the death of Sir David Amess.
MPs and councillors across the city, county and Rutland have received a document from the force outlining key points to consider when meeting constituents.
Following the death of the Southend West MP during a constituency surgery a week ago, Leicestershire’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Rupert Matthews, asked the force to make contact with all locally-elected officials.
Government officials have also said a number of security measures are being considered for MPs since last Friday’s killing.
The document shared by Leicestershire Police advises that escape routes are checked, safety alarms are used and that an incident logbook is kept by officials, among other things.
It states: “When conducting your surgeries, you may meet people who are confrontational or in different states of distress.
“They may display irrational behaviour or become upset, angry or aggressive. It is important that you continually assess your surroundings and potential threats before and during meetings to ensure that you reduce the risks and stay safe”. advice also suggests that councillors should consider using body language that “displays a helpful attitude” while meeting constituents.
Following the murder of MP Jo Cox, in 2016, security measures for MPs were reviewed.
Labour MP for Leicester West, Liz Kendall said she believed they should be looked at again, adding that she would do “everything possiThe ble and reasonable” to ensure the safety of her staff and hereself.
Home Secretary Priti Patel and Justice Secretary Dominic Raab have both said security measures are being looked into, with a police presence or private security both mentioned.
Assistant Chief Constable Julia Debenham said: “As a force, we were shocked and horrified to hear about the horrific attack and the death of MP Sir David Amess. Our thoughts and condolences are very much with Sir David’s family and friends.
“Officers at Leicestershire Police have been in contact with our local MPs following Friday’s tragic events to discuss their security arrangements, offer reassurance and to ensure they are aware of all advice regarding their personal safety and security.
“We have also discussed security arrangements for any events they are planning to attend in the coming days, so the appropriate advice can be provided.
“We encourage MPs to immediately report any security concerns to us in order to keep themselves, their staff and members of the public attending surgeries safe.”
