ROUND-UP OF CHARITY STORIES FROM AROUND THE COUNTY

BIKERS covered 3,000 miles and more than the length of the country to raise money for two charities.

Victor David set up Riders of Charity and spent a year planning a trip in aid of Mind and the Alzheimer’s Society, inspired by his mother.

He said: “My mother passed away in 2019, a few months after being diagnosed with vascular dementia.

“She fought and won against many other illnesses, including stroke and Addison’s, but this battle was too tough.

“In respect of her fighting nature, I knew I needed to do something to raise money for Alzheimer’s Society.

“In her youth my mother was both a rocker and a mod. I had recently discovered motorbikes and it seemed appropriate and correct to raise money by organising a ride.

“I started to promote my idea and was shocked by the positive response. In light of the amount of interest, I created the group Riders of Charity.

“We travelled from Leicester down to Land’s End, and then took all the scenic roads up to John O’Groats before returning to Leicester.

“Over the 12 days and 3,000 miles about 30 riders would join us. We also had 12 Whole Hoggers that did the entire journey with me.

“We returned on the 23rd of July with £8,400 raised for charity, to be split equally between Mind Charity UK and Alzheimer’s Society. I am already planning the next big trip – Ireland 2022.”

ROTARIANS

The three Ashby Rotary Clubs collected £1,002 to mark World Polio Day.

Members of The Rotary Club of Ashby de la Zouch, Hastings Rotary Club and Castle Rotary Club were on collection duty all day at Aldi and Tesco supermarkets and in Market Street.

COMMUNITY ACTION

As part of its Community Fund scheme, David Wilson Homes East Midlands contributed £1,000 to MRC Community Action, a Coalville charity which supports people in and around North West Leicestershire.

Paul Fagan, manager of the charity, said: “We want to ensure the people who use our facilities and services continue to receive the very best of support and the £1,000 donation from David Wilson Homes has made this possible.”

The charity, which has been serving the community for more than 30 years, was named after Marlene Reid, of Whitwick, who died in 1986 and whose own disability inspired her to pioneer local voluntary services.

The contribution from David Wilson Homes will be used towards a renovation project to create additional community meeting room space in the main centre in Belvoir Road.

FUNDING AVAILABLE

Cultural education charity The Mighty Creatives has launched its new Creative Communities Fund.

It is offering seven commissions up to £7,500 to explore creative and innovative responses to the Covid-19 challenge now and post-crisis.

Successful projects will need to support the recovery and sustainability of the cultural education sector.
