Cityscape created to celebrate festival of lights

HIGHCROSS has revealed a cityscape of Leicester created by cardboard sculptor Chris Gilmour to mark Diwali.

The award-winning sculptor - who specialise­s in hyper realistic objects made solely from cardboard and glue - spent two days creating the piece at Highcross, using corrugated cardboard.

Leicester in Lights is on the upper mall bridge, near H&M, and will be there until tomorrow.

Highcross Leicester is encouragin­g shoppers young and old to revel in the artwork’s beauty throughout the celebratio­n of Diwali.

Chris said: “The community spirit In Leicester has always been incredible and I was honoured to design the cardboard Leicester in Lights City Scape for Highcross.

“Highcross is at the heart of Leicester and I designed the artwork with the people of Leicester in mind so I’m thrilled so many people can enjoy the beautiful skyline of Leicester throughout Diwali”.

Jo Tallack, senior general manager at Highcross Leicester, said: “Diwali is a special moment for the entire city of Leicester.

“The last year has really highlighte­d the importance of community, and we’re proud to be celebratin­g Diwali with the Leicester in Lights artwork. Chris is an incredible artist and he’s truly captured the beauty of Leicester using the most sustainabl­e materials.

“We would encourage shoppers to visit the centre and check out the work for themselves and Highcross Leicester would like to wish everyone a very happy Diwali and we hope everyone enjoys the festivitie­s.”

Highcross customers can also hear baja bharat and dhol drummers who will be performing at Highcross today and tomorrow, in celebratio­n of the festival.
