INSIDE THE CARE CRISIS WITH ED BALLS
BBC2, 9pm
After the pandemic put a spotlight on Britain’s care homes, Ed Balls, right, presents this two-part documentary, meeting the undervalued care workers looking after elderly and vulnerable patients.
It’s a particularly emotive subject for Ed, as his own mum, Carolyn, suffers from dementia and lives in a care home. He also admits he feels guilty he couldn’t do more to reform the care system while he was in politics.
Going to work at a Scarborough care home, he is trained in the basics of care, before going on shift. Speaking to the staff about the relentless challenges of their work, he gains a new understanding of the vital role that carers play, and how unsupported they feel.
