Rising star Ahmed extends his stay at Grace Road

-

REHAN Ahmed’s journey in professional cricket continues to go from strength to strength after signing a contract extension at the Uptonsteel County Ground Grace Road.

Ahmed started his career representing Leicestershire’s academy at under-15 level and caught the eye a number of times, none more so than his superlative 134 not out and four wickets in 10 overs, culminating in the victory over Derbyshire CCC under-18s.

The academy graduate was then named in the England Select XI squad which faced India as part of their warm-up schedule ahead of their Test series against England earlier in the year. Ahmed, above, did not feature in the three-day fixture but gained valuable experience bowling against the Indians in the nets and learning from more experienced players.

After signing his first professional contract, Ahmed enjoyed a successful debut season, proving an integral part of Paul Nixon’s Royal London Cup squad.

The leg break bowler was on form with the ball towards the end of the season as he took five wickets in the remaining six fixtures in which he featured.

Upon signing the extension at Leicestershire, Ahmed said: “The last six months have been amazing for me, from earning my first professional contract in cricket, to making my debut to claiming my first wicket and having the opportunity to represent my country.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my short time with Leicestershire so far, and I am delighted to extend my stay at the Uptonsteel County Ground.

“I can’t wait to get to work ahead of the 2022 season with the Running Foxes.”

The impressive all-rounder has also shone on the international stage, representing England U19 against West Indies U19 in September. He took six wickets in five games, with a personal series best in his final outing, taking three wickets and posting an unbeaten 68.

The 17-year-old looks set to continue his excellent international form, as ECB elite pathway coach Richard Dawson recently selected him to represent England Men’s Young Lions (U19) in their tour to Sri Lanka later this month.

The five-match limited over series is part of England’s preparation ahead of ICC Men’s Under-19 Cricket World Cup in the Caribbean, starting in January next year.

Leicestershire head coach Paul Nixon said: “We are absolutely delighted that Rehan has accepted a new deal. He has really embraced our philosophies and strategies here at Leicestershire already.

”It is outstanding how quickly he has transitioned through our Academy set-up and into the firstclass arena as a professional athlete.

“We are looking forward to watching him with England U19 in Sri Lanka in the coming weeks and are excited to see what 2022 has in store for him.”
