IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT FOOTBALL!

-

LEICESTER City are seeking to increase the number of non-football events they hold at the King Power Stadium as part of the expansion plans.

Currently, City have permission to host five non-sporting events, such as concerts, a year, but are hoping to increase that number to 10.

With that, they are also looking to increase the number of people permitted on site at once, lifting the number from 35,000 to 48,950, which would be inclusive of events co-running at the stadium and at the planned indoor arena next door.

While the stadium would host major concerts, such as local favourites Kasabian’s two celebratory gigs following the Premier League title win, the indoor arena, which has a planned maximum capacity of 6,000 standing and 3,000 seated, will host exhibitions, conferences and indoor sporting events, such as e-sports tournaments, as well as music and entertainment events.

The plans also show that City are hoping the increase in attendance helps them to host other sports.

There does not need to be a change in restrictions for this, but the club are hoping that a bigger capacity will increase the appeal for other sports to use the ground as a venue.

City have had rugby played at the King Power Stadium, with Tigers hosting major fixtures there, and with Rugby World Cup games played at the ground when the tournament came to England in 2015.

The plans name Gaelic football, American football and boxing as some of the sporting events they would like to host.

In recent years there has been a rise in the number of other sports taking place at Premier League grounds, with NFL matches and heavyweight boxing bouts at the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this year.
