MENDY READY TO QUIT FOXES

SENEGAL STAR COULD LEAVE IN JANUARY DUE TO LACK OF GAME TIME

-

LEICESTER City midfielder Papy Mendy could leave the club in January, writes Luke Pawley.

The 29-year-old Senegal international has been been left out of the club’s Premier League and Europa League squads this season.

Mendy has shown his professionalism by featuring a handful of times for the under-23s recently and came off the bench during the Carabao Cup tie against Brighton.

He could leave City when the transfer market reopens on New Year’s Day.

A move away from the King Power broke down in the summer because the transfer could not be completed before the required deadline.

It confirms City’s intent to move Mendy on and that will be a key priority in a month-and-a-half ’s time.

Speaking to reporters in Senegal while on international duty last week, Mendy confirmed his desire to leave Leicester City.

“In a club, it’s normal, it’s logical, I’d like to leave. I hope it will get done, but I need to be patient,” he said in a press conference.

Mendy joined City from French side Nice in the summer of 2016, shortly after N’Golo Kante left for Chelsea in a £32 million move.

He has made 80 appearances for the club, with 65 coming in the Premier League.

With so much competition for places in City’s midfield, it was always a possibility that Mendy would hardly feature this season.

There could still be a potential lifeline for Mendy, though, if Hamza Choudhury moves on in January.

The 24-year-old was close to joining Newcastle over the summer and could still be looking to leave, although a move to the north east is less likely following Steve Bruce’s departure.
