It’s Fox Mulder! South African star signs deal

PROTEAS ALL-ROUNDER HAD BEEN DUE TO JOIN LEICESTERSHIRE LAST SEASON

-

SOUTH African all-rounder Wiaan Mulder will be joining Leicestershire as an overseas player for the 2022 season.

The 23-year-old had agreed to join the Foxes last season but the deal was cancelled because of his international commitments.

Mulder, who has six Test caps for the Proteas, will be available for the County Championship and Royal London One-Day Cup.

The South Africa star has been a key part of the Proteas’ plans and will offer Leicestershire CCC quality in all three departments in the LV=County Championship and Royal London Cup.

Mulder, who had a brief spell with Kent in 2019, has played 23 times for South Africa across all formats and was a non-playing member of their squad at this autumn’s T20 World Cup.

He has an average of 36.20 with the bat in first-class cricket and has taken 108 wickets at an average of 24.95 with his medium pace.

Mulder said: “I am very excited to join the Foxes family this upcoming season and grateful for the opportunity.

“We have an exciting squad and I hope to contribute a lot on and off the field during my time at the club”.

The Johannesburg-born cricketer can bat in the top six as well as taking the new ball or coming on as first change.

Mulder averages just 21.07 with the ball in six Tests, a career which has already yielded 14 wickets.

Leicestershire director of cricket Claude Henderson said they were delighted to clinch the South African star’s signature.

He said: “We are very excited to have Wiaan joining us here at Leicestershire County Cricket Club.

“We are looking forward to our players having the chance to benefit from working alongside an international cricketer, as well as seeing Wiaan in the colours of Leicestershire.”

The Running Foxes will play in

Division Two of the County Championship in 2022.
