Whitfield-Green re-elected after tough first year in office
KEVIN Whitfield-Green, the Leicestershire and Rutland Golf Union director of tournaments, has been re-elected chairman of the Midland Golf Union at the annual general meeting held at Kings Norton GC.
Whitfield-Green, right, has held this office for the past 12 months, taking over at a difficult time for the sport with the various coronavirus lockdowns which have seen play and tournaments interrupted for long periods during the pandemic.
He said: “We are proud that our regional programme of championships has been completed fully in the last season, although some dates and venues may have had to be changed to accommodate restrictions.
“But we played our full part in providing a strong regional programme for golfers of all ages – for juniors, men and seniors – as teams and individuals, with many of them going on to represent the Midlands in the national finals after successes. At times it was quite a struggle, but officials, players and, of course, clubs all combined strongly and worked closely together to ensure our fixtures could continue and reach a climax.
“We hope conditions will continue to improve and there will be no future interruptions, but, of course, that depends on whether or not the Covid pandemic can be fully controlled.
“I am delighted to be continuing in this post and look forward to a highly successful future for golf not only in the county but throughout the Midlands.”
Whitfield-Green is a former county golf union president.
He has also served as county first and second team captain over the years since moving to Leicestershire from Northumberland in 1987 where he was also highly active in county golf for several years.
