GP staff are ‘suffering worst abuse in 25 years’
A DOCTOR has hit out at the abuse he and staff have faced from the public, saying it is the worst he has suffered in 25 years with the NHS.
Dr Kirk Moore, who works as practice manager at Measham Medical Unit, criticised the growing numbers of patients who have become aggressive and abusive towards members of staff.
Now, in a stark message issued on behalf of all staff, Dr Moore has laid bare the reality of workloads staff face, while also calling out those responsible for the abuse and warning them they’ll be taken off the patient register if their behaviour is unacceptable.
“During the pandemic we have continued with blood tests, smear tests, antenatal care, six-week baby checks, childhood immunisations and chronic disease reviews,” he said.
“In addition to our normal work we have also staffed the Covid vaccination clinics and are continuing to do flu vaccinations on top of our normal work.
“We are now busier than ever and there is no let-up.”
The GP added the high level of work has been further compounded by government targets on the number of appointments each week.
At present, practices should provide at least 75 appointments per 1,000 patients each week.
Measham Medical Unit is currently ahead of target, providing between 125 and 140 appointments per 1,000 patients each week, furthering staff pressures.
However, this has not gained sympathy from some, with Dr Moore saying aggression from patients had hit new heights.
“We have suffered some of the worst abuse in the 25 years I have worked for the NHS and our staff are feeling it,” he said.
“Please remember that our staff are carrying out doctors’ orders and if we say no to something there is a valid reason or the demand for appointments is outstripping even the increased numbers we are providing.
“If phones are busy it is because we are dealing with one of the 11,000-plus calls coming into us every week. Please be mindful that our staff are human, too.”
Warnings have now been issued that abusive behaviour from patients risks them being removed from practice lists altogether.
It’s a stance that has gained sympathy online.
“All staff at Measham Medical Unit do a fantastic job,” said one person. “Well done to them.”
“Measham Medical Unit has the best doctors I’ve ever been with,” said another.
“I feel they try their best to help. You are all amazing. Thank you!”
Calling for kindness amid the continued pressures on the NHS, Dr Moore said: “Please be kind to our practice staff, they are working very hard for patient care.”
