Thompson decides to call it a day
FORMER Wasps and Leicester Tigers forward Guy Thompson has announced his retirement from professional rugby, writes Bobby Bridge.
The Hereford-born number eight played for Richmond and Jersey Reds before getting his big break with Wasps in 2013, playing 100 times for the Black and Golds.
Thompson, above, made the switch to Welford Road in 2018, making 33 Tigers appearances before joining Ealing Trailfinders in 2020 and, the following year, he made an emotional return to Jersey Reds.
“It’s been one hell of a journey but after 13 professional seasons, it’s finally time to retire,” said Thompson, 35, on his Instagram account.
“From European away trips and the Premiership Final, to representing two giant Premiership clubs with 100 appearances for Wasps and winning a relegation battle with Tigers.
“I feel so lucky and privileged to have had the opportunities I had with the teams I represented, and the team-mates that became family.
“I’ve played with some great players but, more importantly, some great people.
“The support I’ve had from family, friends and supporters, on and off the field, is humbling and something I will never forget.”
Meanwhile, ex-Tigers flanker Julian Salvi has left Exeter Chiefs with immediate effect.
The Australian played 112 times for Tigers in four seasons, winning the Premiership title in 2013.
Two years later, he moved to the Devon club and added a second title win in 2017, before retiring at the end of the 2017/18 season.
After hanging up his boots, Salvi become the defence coach at Sandy Park as Rob Baxter’s men achieved a Gallagher Premiership and Heineken Champions Cup double in 2020.
Director of Rugby Baxter said: “I have been looking to make a change and bring in some fresh ideas within the coaching group.
“Julian’s contract was up at the end of the season and following discussions between myself and him, I have made the decision to make that change now.”
